5 Steps to your first sourdough loaf
- Make your starter – combine equal parts flour and water in a jar and let it sit at room temperature. Feed it daily with fresh flour and water until it’s bubbly and active—usually about 5–7 days.
- Mix your dough – Once your starter is ready, mix it with flour, water, and salt to form your dough. Use a large bowl and stir until everything is combined.
- Let it rise (bulk fermentation) – Cover your dough and let it rest at room temperature for several hours. This slow fermentation helps develop flavour and texture.
- Shape your loaf – Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, shape it into a round or oval, and place it into a floured banneton or bowl for the final rise.
- Bake your bread – Preheat your oven with a baking stone or Dutch oven inside. Score the top of your loaf, then bake it covered for the first 20 minutes to trap steam. Remove the cover and bake until golden and crusty.
